# Add a DNS record

Services like Google or MailerLite often ask you to add a DNS record. If the domain uses Inleed’s nameservers, you add it yourself.

## Right guide?

- Setting up SPF, DKIM or DMARC?

- Pointing your website to Wix, Shopify or similar?

## Before you start

- Have the record’s type, name and value from the service ready.
- The domain must use Inleed’s nameservers. Otherwise, add the record where the domain’s DNS is handled.

## How to add the record

### A. Add the record in DirectAdmin

The domain is on a hosting plan at Inleed.

1. Log in to [DirectAdmin](https://inleed.com/helpcenter/log-in-to-directadmin), open **Account Manager › DNS Management** and click **Add Record**.

With several domains, pick the right one first.

2. Choose the type the service gives under **Record Type**, for example `TXT`.

3. Enter the name under **Name**: `@` for the domain itself, otherwise only the start, for example `www`.

Your domain name is already shown after the field.

4. Paste the value from the service under **Value**.

   TTL can stay at 3600.

End a name value, as for a CNAME, with a dot. Otherwise your domain name is added.

5. Click **Add**.

The record is added to the list.

### B. Add the record in the client area

The domain has no hosting.

1. Log in to the [client area](https://login.inleed.net) and click **Manage** next to the domain.

   The domain’s page opens.

2. Open the **DNS / Nameservers** tab.

3. Create the zone if it says **Create DNS zone**: enter your website’s IP address under **IPv4 Address** and click **Save**.

The address is used for the domain, `www` and `mail`.

4. Choose the type the service gives under **Type**, for example `TXT`.

5. Enter the name under **Name**: `@` for the domain itself, otherwise only the start, for example `www`.

`@` changes to your domain name when you leave the field. That’s correct.

Don’t enter the full domain name, or it ends up twice.

6. Paste the value from the service under **Points To**.

Quotes and the ending dot are added automatically. TTL can stay at 300.

7. Click **Add Record**.

A confirmation shows, and the record is added to the list.

## How to know it worked

The record is in the list.

**Waiting time:** The record usually works within a few minutes. A changed record can take up to an hour.

## If something doesn’t work

### It says the record could not be created

**Why:** Usually a CNAME on a name that already has another record, or on `@`.

**What to do:** Delete the old record on the same name first. On `@`, use an A record instead.

### The name came out twice, for example www.yourdomain.com.yourdomain.com

**What to do:** Delete the record and add it again with only the start of the name.

### The service can’t find the record

**What to do:** Wait 5 minutes and try again. If that doesn’t help, check that the domain uses Inleed’s nameservers.

## Good to know

- Services like Google or MailerLite name the fields differently: **Host** or **Name** goes in **Name**, and **Value**, **Target** or **Points to** goes in **Points To**.
