# Change the PTR record (reverse DNS) for your IP

The PTR record, or reverse DNS (rDNS), is the name your IP address answers with. You usually change it when the server is going to send email.

## Before you start

- The name needs an A record that points to the same IP address. Otherwise many mail servers won’t accept it.

## How to change it

1. Log in to the [client area](https://login.inleed.net) and click **Network**.

Your IP addresses are listed, with the PTR record under **rDNS**.

2. Click the IP address, then edit the name under **rDNS**.

3. Enter the new name, for example `mail.yourdomain.com`, and save.

Enter the name without a dot at the end.

## How to know it worked

The IP address answers with the new name.

**Waiting time:** It takes about 5 minutes for the change to take effect.

## Good to know

- If you haven’t changed anything, the IP address answers with `noptr.inleed.net`.
