# Change the root password for your VPS

Root is the server’s administrator account. Change its password in the [client area](https://login.inleed.net) if you’ve forgotten it or want a new one.

## Faster: let an AI app do it

If you’ve connected Inleed to an AI app, just write what you want done, for example:

> Change the root password on my VPS

The app prepares the change. You approve it in the client area.

[How to connect an AI app](https://inleed.com/helpcenter/connect-ai-app)

## Before you start

- The server runs Linux. The change doesn’t work on Windows servers.
- The server restarts when the password is changed, so it is down for a short while.

## How to change it

1. Log in to the [client area](https://login.inleed.net) and click **Manage** next to your VPS.

   Your VPS’s page opens.

2. Click **Forgot the password?** and follow the steps.

## How to know it worked

The server has a new root password.

## Good to know

- If you’re logged in to the server, you can also change the password with the `passwd` command.
- SSH to a VPS uses port 22, unless you’ve changed it yourself.
