# Connect your domain to Microsoft 365

To have your email with Microsoft 365, the domain must point there. Which path you take depends on whether the domain is on a hosting plan at Inleed.

## Before you start

- The domain must be added in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- All addresses on the domain move to Microsoft. A domain receives email in one place, so Inleed email and Microsoft 365 can’t be mixed.

## How to connect the domain

### A. Add the records in DirectAdmin

The domain is on a hosting plan at Inleed.

**Important:** Old email doesn’t move on its own. If you buy the licences from us, we move it for you. Get in touch before you switch.

1. Log in to [DirectAdmin](https://inleed.com/helpcenter/log-in-to-directadmin), open **Account Manager › DNS Management** and click **Add Record**.

With several domains, pick the right one first.

2. Choose the type Microsoft shows under **Record Type**, for example `MX` or `TXT`.

3. Enter the name Microsoft shows under **Name**, for example `autodiscover`.

Your domain name is already shown after the field.

4. Paste the value from Microsoft under **Value**.

If the value is a name, as for MX and CNAME, it must end with a dot. Otherwise your domain name is added.

5. Click **Add**.

Repeat the steps for every record Microsoft shows.

6. Open **E-mail Manager › MX Records** and untick **Use this server to handle my e-mails**.

   Then click **Save**.

Otherwise email is delivered locally at Inleed.

7. Go back to Microsoft 365 and click **Verify**.

### B. Automatic configuration in the client area

The domain has no hosting.

1. Log in to the [client area](https://login.inleed.net) and click **Manage** next to the domain.

   The domain’s page opens.

2. Open the **DNS / Nameservers** tab.

**Important:** Old email doesn’t move on its own. If you buy the licences from us, we move it for you. Get in touch before you switch.

3. Click **Automatic configuration** and choose **Configure for Microsoft 365**.

4. Go back to Microsoft 365 and click **Verify**.

## How to know it worked

Email to the domain goes to Microsoft 365.

**Waiting time:** A changed MX record normally goes through within an hour. With the Microsoft preset it can take up to 24 hours. Meanwhile, email can arrive at both the old and the new provider.

## If something doesn’t work

### The other addresses on the domain stopped working

**Why:** A domain receives email in one place, so all email now goes to Microsoft.

**What to do:** Add the addresses in Microsoft 365, at [admin.microsoft.com](https://admin.microsoft.com).

### The domain is already in another Microsoft tenant

**Why:** A domain can’t be in 2 tenants.

**What to do:** Remove the domain from the old tenant first. That can take up to 24 hours. If it’s in the wrong tenant, you must contact Microsoft.

## Good to know

- **Configure for Microsoft 365** adds MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC. If you already have an SPF record for something else, check that it’s still there.
