# Connect your domain to a website on another service

If your website is on another service, such as Shopify or Wix, you point the domain there with the DNS records or nameservers it gives you.

## Right guide?

- Is the website on your hosting at Inleed?
[Connect a domain to your hosting](https://inleed.com/helpcenter/connect-domain-to-hosting)

## How to connect it

1. Get what the service gives you: DNS records, usually an A record for `@` and a CNAME for `www`, or nameservers.

### A. The service gives you DNS records

Most common. The domain is on a hosting plan at Inleed.

2. Log in to [DirectAdmin](https://inleed.com/helpcenter/log-in-to-directadmin), open **Account Manager › DNS Management** and click **Edit** next to the domain’s A record.

Change the value to what the service says and save.

With several domains, pick the right one first.

3. Tick the box on the `www` row if that name already has a record, and click **Delete**, then **Confirm**.

4. Click **Add Record**.

5. Choose `CNAME` under **Record Type** and enter this value `www` under **Name**.

6. Paste the service’s value under **Value** and add a dot at the end, for example `shops.myshopify.com.`

Without the dot, your domain name is added and www points wrong.

7. Click **Add**.

The CNAME record for www is added to the list.

### B. The service gives you DNS records, in the client area

The domain has no hosting.

2. Log in to the [client area](https://login.inleed.net) and click **Manage** next to the domain.

3. Open the **DNS / Nameservers** tab.

4. Click **Edit** on the row for the domain’s A record and change the value to what the service says.

The fields open in the row. Save when done.

5. Delete the A record for `www` and add the service’s CNAME for `www`.

### C. The service gives you nameservers

All DNS is then handled by the service.

2. Switch to the service’s nameservers: [Change the nameservers](https://inleed.com/helpcenter/change-nameservers).

First add your email records (MX and SPF) at the service, or your email stops working.

## How to know it worked

The domain shows the website on the service, and email works as before.

**Waiting time:** Changed records usually work within a few minutes. A nameserver change can take up to 48 hours.

## If something doesn’t work

### It says the record could not be created

**Why:** There is already a record on the same name. A CNAME cannot share a name with another record.

**What to do:** Delete the old record first.

### The service can’t verify the domain

**What to do:** Put the TXT record on `@` and keep only the latest one. The service can take up to an hour to see it.

### My email stopped working

**Why:** The MX records are missing at the service after the nameserver change.

**What to do:** Add Inleed’s email records at the service, or switch back to Inleed’s nameservers.

[Change the nameservers for your domain](https://inleed.com/helpcenter/change-nameservers)

### The website shows “Not secure”

**Why:** The service issues the SSL certificate, not Inleed, and only once the domain points there.

**What to do:** Wait a while.

## Good to know

- Change only the records the service asks for. Keep MX and SPF, and your email keeps working.
