# Connect a domain to your hosting

A domain has to be connected to your hosting before the website and email work on it. What you do depends on where the domain is registered.

## Right guide?

- Is the website on Wix, Shopify or similar?

- Want to transfer the domain itself to Inleed?

## Before you start

- Website or email with another provider? Move the content first, and don’t change nameservers until that’s done.

## How to connect it

### A. The domain is registered with Inleed

The domain is listed under **Services** in the client area.

1. Log in to the [client area](https://login.inleed.net) and click **Manage** next to the domain.

   The domain’s page opens.

2. Open the **DNS / Nameservers** tab.

3. Click **Move to hosting account** under **DNS Records**.

If it says **Create DNS zone**, create the zone first.

4. Choose your hosting account.

5. Click **Move to [hosting account]**.

The domain is added to your hosting, and DNS follows within a minute or two.

6. Log in to [DirectAdmin](https://inleed.com/helpcenter/log-in-to-directadmin), open **Account Manager › DNS Management** and check the A records for the domain, `www` and `mail`.

Pick the domain first. The records should point to your hosting’s IP address.

The records move unchanged. If they pointed to another server before, they still do.

7. Click **Edit** next to a record that points wrong, enter your hosting’s IP address under **Value** and save.

The IP address is in the client area under **Hosting Specifics**.

Change the records here in DirectAdmin, not in the client area.

### B. The domain is with another provider

1. Log in to [DirectAdmin](https://inleed.com/helpcenter/log-in-to-directadmin), open **Account Manager › Domains** and click **Add New**.

2. Enter the domain name under **Domain**, for example `yourcompany.com`.

   Without `www` and without `http://`.

3. Click **Create**.

The domain is added and gets a DNS zone automatically.

4. At the provider where the domain is, switch to Inleed’s nameservers, or point the domain with 2 A records.

`@` and `www` to the IP address under **Hosting Specifics** in the client area.

## How to know it worked

The website shows on the domain. Its email accounts work once it points here.

**Waiting time:** If you change nameservers, it can take up to 48 hours. A records usually work within a few minutes, sometimes up to an hour.

## If something doesn’t work

### The website still shows the old site

**What to do:** Wait a while. If that doesn’t help, check that `@` and `www` point to your hosting’s IP address.

### It says the domain already exists

**Why:** The domain is still on another hosting or client account.

**What to do:** Remove it or its DNS zone there, then add it again.

### The website shows “Not secure”

**Why:** The SSL certificate can only be created once the domain and `www` point here.

**What to do:** Turn it on once they do.

## Good to know

- You don’t need to transfer the domain to Inleed. It’s enough that it points here.
- You can have as many domains as you like on your hosting, within its disk space.
