# The domain already exists when I add it

A domain can only exist in one place at a time. If you get an error saying the domain already exists, it’s still somewhere else at Inleed. Start with the cause at the top.

## Common causes

### 1. The domain has a DNS zone in the client area

**Check:** Does the domain have its own DNS zone in the [client area](https://login.inleed.net), under **DNS / Nameservers**? The zone counts as the domain already existing.

**What to do:** Don’t add the domain in DirectAdmin. Move the zone to your hosting from the client area instead, and the records come along.

### 2. The domain is called yourdomain.com.new in DirectAdmin

**Check:** Does the domain end in `.new` in DirectAdmin? Then a DNS zone for it already existed when you added it.

**What to do:** Delete the old DNS zone in the client area. It takes about 10 minutes.

Then delete the domain ending in `.new` under **Domains** in DirectAdmin, and add the domain again.

### 3. The domain was on another hosting account before

**Check:** Have you had the domain on another of your hosting accounts? Then it is still there.

**What to do:** Delete the domain under **Domains** in the old hosting account’s DirectAdmin, then add it again.

### 4. The domain is on another Inleed account

**Check:** Has someone else added the domain, or do you have an old Inleed account?

**What to do:** Contact [support](mailto:support@inleed.se) from your account’s email address. If the domain is on someone else’s account, support removes it there.

## Good to know

- When you move the zone to your hosting, all records come along unchanged. If they point to another server, change `mail` and `www` to your hosting’s IP address, or your email ends up in the wrong place.
