# My website shows server error 500, 502 or 503

Server errors are usually caused by the website’s code, the PHP version or resource limits, not by the server being down. Start with the cause at the top.

## Common causes

### 1. 500 Internal Server Error

**Check:** Does the page show 500? Then the error is usually in the website’s code or in `.htaccess`.

**What to do:** Open the error log. It shows which file and line the error is on.

### 2. The error came after you changed PHP version

**Check:** Did you change the PHP version right before the error appeared?

**What to do:** Follow the troubleshooting for errors after a PHP version change.

### 3. WordPress shows a critical error

**Check:** Does the page say “There has been a critical error”?

### 4. 503 when there are many visitors

**Check:** Does the error appear when many people visit the website? Then your hosting is hitting its resource limits, and new visits are stopped for a while.

**What to do:** Check the resource usage and turn on cache.

### 5. 502, or PHP files download instead of showing

**Check:** Is **Standalone Nginx** turned on?

**What to do:** Turn **Standalone Nginx** off again.
