# Update the password in your email app

After changing the password for the email address, every device needs the new one. Otherwise email stops working there.

## Right guide?

- Haven’t changed the password yet, or have you forgotten it?

## Before you start

- Have the new password ready. You change it in DirectAdmin.

- Update all your devices straight away. A device that tries the old password can get your IP address blocked.

## How to update the password

### A. Mail on iPhone, iPad or Mac

Steps 1–4 are for iPhone and iPad, steps 5–6 for a Mac.

1. Go to **Settings › Apps › Mail › Mail Accounts** on iPhone or iPad and tap the account.

2. Open the account details and enter the new password under **Incoming Mail Server**.

3. Tap **SMTP** under **Outgoing Mail Server** and then the primary server.

4. Enter the password there too and confirm.

Confirm again when you’re back on the account.

5. Choose **Mail › Settings** on a Mac, go to the accounts section and select the account.

6. Click **Server Settings**, enter the password for the incoming and outgoing server and click **Save**.

### B. Outlook or Thunderbird on a computer

Step 1 is for classic Outlook on Windows, step 2 for Thunderbird.

1. Open Outlook and enter the new password when Outlook asks for it.

If Outlook doesn’t ask: choose **File › Account Settings › Server Settings**, enter the password under **Incoming mail** and **Outgoing mail** and choose **Next › Done**.

2. Start Thunderbird, click **Enter New Password** in the box that appears and enter the new one.

If no box appears: open the settings in the **≡** menu, choose **Privacy & Security › View Saved Passwords…** and remove the passwords for `mail.inleed.com`. Thunderbird then asks for the new one.

### C. The Gmail app on Android

1. Open the Gmail app and tap **Menu › Settings**.

2. Choose the email address and enter the new password in the settings for the incoming and outgoing server.

## How to know it worked

Email is fetched and sent again on all your devices.

## If something doesn’t work

### The new password isn’t accepted

**Why:** The password is mistyped, or the username isn’t the full email address.

**What to do:** Log in to [webmail](https://mail.inleed.com/) with the new password. If it works there, enter it again in the app.

### Everything stopped working at home a while after the change

**Why:** A device with the old password has got your network’s IP address blocked.

**What to do:** Update the password on all your devices and whitelist your IP address.

## Good to know

- Change the account that’s already in the app. Don’t add it a second time.
- The password can’t be viewed afterwards, at Inleed or in DirectAdmin. If you’ve forgotten it, change to a new one.
