# My website shows 403 Forbidden or 404

With 403 the page isn’t allowed to show, with 404 it isn’t found. Pick what matches what you see.

## Common causes

### 1. 404 on the start page

**Check:** Are the website’s files in the right folder?

**What to do:** Put them in `domains/yourdomain.com/public_html`.

### 2. 403 Forbidden on the start page

**Check:** Is there an `index.html` or `index.php` in the folder?

**What to do:** Upload a start page, or install WordPress.

### 3. 403 on certain files or folders

**Check:** Do the files and folders have the right permissions? Wrong permissions are common after a move.

**What to do:** Set files to `644` and folders to `755` in the file manager.

### 4. 404 on all subpages in WordPress

**Check:** Does the start page work but not the subpages? Then `.htaccess` is missing or wrong.

**What to do:** Open **Settings › Permalinks** in WordPress and click **Save Changes** without changing anything.

### 5. The domain shows another website or the default page

**Check:** Has the domain been added to your hosting, and is the document root correct?

**What to do:** Add the domain to your hosting if it’s missing.

If it’s already there, click **Edit** next to the document root on your hosting’s page in the [client area](https://login.inleed.net). It should be `domains/yourdomain.com/public_html`.
