# WordPress shows a critical error or a blank page

The website shows a critical error or a completely blank page, often after an update. Start with the cause that matches.

## Common causes

### 1. A plugin or theme isn’t working

**Check:** Did the error come after you updated or installed a plugin or theme?

**What to do:** Disable it from the File Manager.

### 2. The PHP version has changed

**Check:** Did the error come after you changed the PHP version?

**What to do:** Follow the troubleshooting for errors after a PHP change.

### 3. PHP has too little memory

**Check:** Does the error log say `Allowed memory size exhausted`?

**What to do:** Raise `memory_limit` in the PHP settings.

### 4. The cause is unknown

**Check:** Don’t know what changed?

**What to do:** Read the error log. It shows which file causes the error.

### 5. Nothing helps

**Check:** Is the error still there after the steps above?

**What to do:** Restore a backup from before the error.

## Good to know

- WordPress often emails the administrator a link to recovery mode when a critical error happens. Check your inbox.
- Inleed’s support helps with the server and the account, not with WordPress plugins and themes.
