# WordPress subpages show 404

The home page works, but the subpages show 404. Work through the causes from the top.

## Common causes

### 1. The rules for the addresses need rewriting

**Check:** Have you re-saved the permalinks in WordPress?

**What to do:** Open **Settings › Permalinks** in WordPress and click **Save Changes** without changing anything. WordPress then rewrites its rules for the addresses.

### 2. The `.htaccess` file is missing or has the wrong content

**Check:** Is `.htaccess` in `public_html`? It can be missing after a move.

**What to do:** Show hidden files in the File Manager and check that the file is there. Then save the permalinks again.

### 3. Something in this particular website, usually a plugin

**Check:** Does it work with plain addresses (`?p=123`) but not with **Post name**?

**What to do:** Disable the plugins one at a time and test.
