Troubleshooting

The VPN connection isn’t working

The VPN won’t connect, or no traffic gets through the tunnel. Start with the cause at the top, it’s the most common.

Updated 6 Nov 2026

Common causes

1The VPN has stopped connecting

Check

Is the configuration file old or changed?

What to do

Download a new file in the client area and import it in the app.

With OpenVPN, only the file you downloaded most recently works.

Set up WireGuard VPN
2It works on your phone but not at work or school

Check

Does the VPN work from another network, for example your phone?

What to do

The network you’re on is blocking the VPN. Use another network. OpenVPN uses port 1194 TCP, which some providers block.

3OpenVPN gives TLS errors

Check

Are you using OpenVPN 2.6 or newer?

What to do

The cipher settings in the configuration may need changing. OpenVPN 2.5.9 works well.

4Some services don’t work through the VPN

Check

Is the tunnel up but the services don’t respond? Inleed blocks no ports, but your own firewall can.

What to do

Check the firewall and antivirus on your computer.

5OpenVPN shows a certificate error

Check

Does it say Missing external certificate?

What to do

Click Cancel and untick the certificate requirement in the profile, or click Continue.

Good to know

  • The VPN/Firewall service uses OpenVPN. The .ovpn file and login details are under Manage in the client area. If the service isn’t shown there, email support.
  • Encryption lowers the speed, and WireGuard is usually faster than OpenVPN.
