How long do DNS changes take to work?
Answer
A new or changed DNS record usually works within a few minutes. Sometimes it takes up to an hour.
If you change nameservers, it can take up to 48 hours before the whole internet sees the change. It can’t be sped up, and meanwhile your website can switch between the old and the new server.
Good to know
- We’ve measured it: a new record was on all of Inleed’s nameservers within a minute. Other networks see it within the record’s TTL, normally 5 minutes.
- A changed MX record normally takes effect within an hour. Meanwhile, email can arrive at both the old and the new provider.
- If you are moving something, lower the TTL to
300the day before, so the switch goes faster.
