DNS record types and common values
The most common DNS records and what they do. Use this page when a service asks you to add a DNS record and you want to know which type it is.
Common record types
| Type | Used for |
|---|---|
| A | Points a name to an IPv4 address, for example your hosting’s. It’s in the client area on your hosting’s page. |
| AAAA | The same for IPv6. |
| CNAME | Points a name to another name. Not on @, and not where another record already exists. |
| MX | Where email goes, with a priority. Lowest number first. |
| TXT | Text, for example SPF, DKIM, DMARC and verification codes. |
| SRV | Services such as Teams or autodiscover. |
| CAA | Who may issue SSL certificates. |
| NS | The domain’s nameservers. |
Good to know
@means the domain itself. Otherwise you only enter the start of the name, for examplewww. If you enter the full name, the domain is added a second time.- In the client area you don’t need to end the value with a dot, it’s added for you. In DirectAdmin a name in the value must end with a dot, for example
mail.yourdomain.com., or the domain is added a second time. - If the domain uses Inleed’s nameservers, support can add the records for you. Email the records as text to support from the account’s registered email address or from the technical contact.
