WordPress says “The response is not a valid JSON response”

The error shows when you save in WordPress, for example a widget. Work through the causes from the top.

Updated 6 Nov 2026

Common causes

1The permalinks or .htaccess are wrong

Check

Does it happen on every page?

What to do

Open Settings › Permalinks in WordPress and click Save Changes without changing anything.

2The WordPress address doesn’t match

Check

Does the site’s address start with http while you’re on https, or the other way round?

What to do

Set the same address, with https, under Settings › General.

3A plugin is blocking the request

Check

Did it start after a new plugin?

What to do

Disable the plugins one at a time.

Disable a WordPress plugin from the File Manager
4The server’s protection may be stopping the request

Check

Does it only happen when the page contains certain text or code?

What to do

Email support with the address and the time, and we’ll check.
