WordPress subpages show 404

The home page works, but the subpages show 404. Work through the causes from the top.

Updated 6 Nov 2026

Common causes

1The rules for the addresses need rewriting

Check

Have you re-saved the permalinks in WordPress?

What to do

Open Settings › Permalinks in WordPress and click Save Changes without changing anything. WordPress then rewrites its rules for the addresses.

Log in to WordPress
2The .htaccess file is missing or has the wrong content

Check

Is .htaccess in public_html? It can be missing after a move.

What to do

Show hidden files in the File Manager and check that the file is there. Then save the permalinks again.

Upload files to your website
3Something in this particular website, usually a plugin

Check

Does it work with plain addresses (?p=123) but not with Post name?

What to do

Disable the plugins one at a time and test.

Disable a WordPress plugin from the File Manager
