Troubleshooting

My VPS can’t be reached

Your VPS doesn’t respond to SSH, web or ping. Start with the cause at the top. The console in the client area works even when the server’s network doesn’t.

Right guide?

Do you have web hosting rather than a VPS? My website is down

Common causes

1The server is off or has hung

Check

Does nothing respond at all? Open Console and see whether the server shows anything.

What to do

Restart the server in the client area.

Restart your VPS
2The network settings in the operating system are wrong

Check

Does the server start but have no network, for example after a reinstall?

What to do

Log in through Console and check the IP address and gateway. Also check that the network hasn’t been changed from static IP to DHCP and that the network interface is up.

3Your IP address is blocked on the server

Check

Can you reach the server on mobile data but not from the office? Then the server’s own firewall or a protection against login attempts may have blocked your IP address.

What to do

Log in through Console and release your IP address in the server’s firewall. With CSF, type csf -a followed by the IP address.

4You’ve forgotten the root password

Check

Can you reach the server but not log in, because the password doesn’t work?

What to do

Change the root password with Forgot the password? on your VPS’s page.

Change the root password for your VPS

Good to know

  • Without Server maintenance, we don’t troubleshoot the server for you, but we can restart it. If you’d rather not look after the server yourself, Server maintenance is available as an add-on.
