Troubleshooting

My broadband is slower than I pay for

Wifi almost always gives a lower speed than the line, so measure with a cable before you look for faults. Start with the cause at the top, it is the most common.

Common causes

1You’re measuring over wifi or through the router

Check

Is the computer you measure with connected over wifi or through the router?

What to do

Connect a computer with a cable directly to the fibre box, without a router and without wifi. Measure with Bredbandskollen and save a screenshot of the result.

Test your connection directly at the fibre box
2The speed stops at about 100 Mbit/s

Check

Do you measure around 100 Mbit/s although you pay for more, even with a cable? It can happen after a power cut.

What to do

Use a Cat5e or Cat6 cable and a computer whose network card handles gigabit. Then restart the fibre box.

A cable, network card or router that only handles 100 Mbit/s locks the speed there.

3You recently changed to a higher speed

Check

Have you restarted the fibre box and the router since the change?

What to do

Restart the fibre box and the router. The new speed only applies after a restart.

4It’s slow even with a cable directly in the fibre box

Check

Does the test with a cable directly in the fibre box show less than half the speed you pay for?

What to do

Then it may be a fault in the network. Report a fault and include the screenshot from the test.

Report a broadband fault

Good to know

  • If it’s fast with a cable directly in the fibre box but slow through the router, the router or wifi is the limit.
  • Wifi on 5 GHz is faster than 2.4 GHz. Distance, obstacles and interference lower the speed.
