Troubleshooting

My mailbox is full

When a mailbox or your whole hosting account is full, email sent to you bounces. Find out which it is, then free up space or raise the limit.

Updated 6 Nov 2026

Common causes

1Only one mailbox is full

Check

Has the address reached its own limit (quota)? In DirectAdmin under E-mail Accounts, you can see how much of its quota each address uses.

What to do

Raise the address’s quota in DirectAdmin, or delete old email. New email accounts get 50 MB unless you change it, and with Max there’s no limit beyond your hosting’s space.

2The whole hosting account is full

Check

Has your hosting run out of space? Email, files and databases share the same space.

What to do

Free up space or upgrade your hosting.

3You’ve deleted email but it still says full

Check

Is the email still in the trash? The trash counts, and the statistics update once a day.

What to do

Empty the trash and wait until the next day.

Good to know

  • You get a warning email when 70% of your hosting’s space is used. If the space runs out, the hosting can be locked at a check after midnight. Contact support if that has happened.
