Turn on an SSL certificate for your website
An SSL certificate lets your website load over https and show as secure. Certificates are free and are usually created automatically. Follow these steps when that hasn’t happened, or when the automation is turned off.
Is your website on Wix, Shopify or similar? Connect your domain to a website on another service
Is the certificate in place, but your website still shows “Not secure”? My website shows “Not secure”
If you’ve connected Inleed to an AI app, just write what you want done, for example:
Done. A free SSL certificate for example.se and www has been issued.
Before you start
- The domain must be on your hosting, and both the domain and www must point to it. Connect a domain to your hosting
How to turn it on
- 1
Log in to the client area and click your hosting under Websites, email & DNS.
DirectAdmin opens. No password is needed.
- 2
Open Account Manager in the menu and click SSL/TLS Certificates.
If you have several domains, switch to the right one first.
- 3
Click ACME settings if it says
The ACME system is disabled.Only when the automation (ACME) is turned off for the domain.
- 4
Tick Enable ACME.
Leave the other settings as they are.
- 5
Click Save Changes.
The message
ACME configuration updated successfullyappears. - 6
Click Provision Now next to the domain under New Certificates.
The certificate is created right away. Otherwise it’s created automatically within 24 hours.
- 7
To send every visitor to https, open Domains, click the domain and tick Force SSL with https redirect.
Only do this once the certificate works.
- 8
Click Modify.
How to know it worked
Done
The certificate shows as Valid under Certificate list, and Renewal mode is Automatic. It then renews by itself.
Waiting time
With Provision Now it takes a few minutes. Otherwise it usually takes 15–30 minutes after the domain points here, and at most 24 hours.
If something doesn’t work
“Renewal mode” says “Manual”
Why: ACME is turned off for the domain. The certificate still renews automatically.
What to do: You don’t need to do anything. If you want ACME to handle the certificate, tick Enable ACME under ACME settings.
No certificate is created
Why: The domain or www doesn’t point to your hosting, or an AAAA record points somewhere else.
What to do: Check the A records for @ and www, and remove AAAA records that point to the wrong place.
The website still shows “Not secure”
Why: The page loads images or scripts over http, or the visitor lands on http.
What to do: Tick Force SSL with https redirect in step 7.
My website shows “Not secure”A certificate you bought yourself has been replaced
Why: ACME replaces certificates that aren’t in the Skip list.
What to do: Add your certificate to the Skip list under ACME settings.
Good to know
- With Inleed’s nameservers the certificate also covers first-level subdomains (
*.yourdomain.com). Prefer wildcard certificates is on by default. - Under Provisioning history you can see when certificates were created and whether anything went wrong.
